National Higher
Education Conference
Malaysia’s Roadmap to the Future: Leading the Way through Higher
Education 2008
1st & 2nd July 2008, Hotel
Nikko, Kuala Lumpur
“Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our
progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental
resource.”
(John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States of
America) |
This statement is true of every nation that believes in investing in
education, particularly higher education, as a means to achieving
greater socio-economic progress and human capital development.
Indeed, Malaysia has come a long way in its education journey. Since
the inception of its first university in 1961, Malaysia now has 20
public universities, 32 private universities and university
colleges, 4 branch campuses of international universities, 21
polytechnics, 37 public community colleges and 485 private colleges.
Malaysia’s higher education progress has been impressive but with
increasing global competition coupled with rapid changes in the
education field, the country’s higher education system is at a
critical point in its development. Malaysia urgently needs to
transform its higher education sector. Reforms have since begun with
the implementation of the National Higher Education Strategic Plan.
This national higher education conference seeks to facilitate
discussions on issues pertinent to the future development of
Malaysia’s higher education sector, believing that higher education
is truly Malaysia’s roadmap to the future.
