In today’s data rich age, vast amounts of data are routine collected. These are termed ‘happenstance’ or ‘observational’ data.

The role of statistics with such observational data is to extract all available information—often called Data Mining. Equally important is to design the right sampling plan to afford the right data in order to extract information which will allow critical sources of variation to be identified, as well as, to the extent possible, highlight significant relationships between inputs and outputs. The researcher can then use statistical methods much like a detective looking for clues, to release otherwise hidden information from data, providing knowledge for correct decisions.

Observational data require special techniques and care in order to extract meaningful information and reach valid conclusions. Observational data are common in manufacturing and service industries and can yield valuable information from normal process data without resorting to designed experimental data which may be more costly to obtain. The Basic and Intermediate training programs gives basic methods for data mining observational data.

For the sake of simplicity we often deal with problems one variable at a time. However, the world we live in is more complex with many inter-related processes. In short, the world is multivariate. Advanced Data Mining program introduces the participant to basic types of analyses for multivariate data. This will enable one to deal with correlated data, explore many variables simultaneously and provide a more complete characterization of processes.

What Participants will Gain:

  • Understanding Hypothesis Testing and Errors Involved in Decision Making.
  • Learn the Different Types of Statistical Tests Based on the Type of Data Available.
  • Avoid the Pitfalls and Perils of Analyzing Observational Data.
  • Improve Utilization of Available Information.
  • Understanding Multiple Regression and Logistic Regression Techniques.
  • Be Able to Apply Multivariate Modeling to Characterize and Discover New Patterns, Behaviors and Relationships.

Featuring Real-World Applications of Data Mining Strategies and Practices from Leading Industrial Statisticians: Puan Saleha Yusof and Dr. Paul Mullenix, PhD, each with over 20 years experience in industry and published research in the use of Data Mining techniques for process characterization and market segmentation.

Creativity & Innovation Workshop
Led by: Mr Hari Parameswaran,
CEO of Dynam Design, Bangalore
November 29, 2007 * Sime Darby Convention Centre

"Ideas from many heads are better than one. I am limited if I work by myself. If we can pool all the brains together, and come up with one product we can go one step closer to becoming a developed nation"

Dato Ghazi Sheik Ramli
President, Malaysian Association of Creativity and Innovation
Sunday Star, 4th March 2007

If the world has to rise from its status of being largely followers to that of leaders in Industry, Business and Education, it is imperative that we must focus on Creativity at all levels of management.

Training in this module aims to surface qualities inherent in every participant by a holistic approach using techniques that aim at a fusion of Left and Right Brain attributes. The importance of teamwork is stressed through emphasis on the fact that no two brains are the same. Trainees are exposed to simple creations of children to understand the process of creativity from the stage of observation, insight, preparation, incubation, illumination and verification to practical application. The approach aims at getting them to work closely with people at various levels in an organisation to provide the state of mind to put creativity to work at their jobs. The importance of adding, borrowing, combining and deleting various outputs from different people for arriving at a creative high is stressed.
